Jacksonville’s VOICE
In 2020, the nation went through a year of education and reflection with the murder of George Floyd and many other black men and women, the tragic loss of life from the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, and a rise in political tensions. Despite having to deal with these issues individually in the past, society has never had to face these challenges all at once. This body of work documents a unique moment in history, exploring these political, social and environmental changes in Jacksonville, Florida.
Each piece highlights current news such as the effects of COVID-19, racial injustice and the public display of Confederate monuments, the increasing rate of homelessness and the consequences of environmental pollution. To draw attention to these ideas, they are photographed and developed into magazine covers for a mock-up community magazine, known as Jacksonville’s VOICE. These fabricated covers shed light on local and national matters, using images and text to communicate those topics to viewers.
